It may not be fair, but in the everyday world you are judged and influenced by all these criteria, and more &#8211;<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>even your occupation, status, height, dress and the way you look. And like it or not, it&rsquo;s through the way you speak and look that you earn trust and confidence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">So, with none of these visual cues present in written communication, how do you earn trust and confidence when you write letters, reports or e-mail messages?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">In written communication, especially e-mail, you have to find other ways to evaluate the person who is &lsquo;speaking&rsquo; (writing). People do that by looking at &lsquo;style&rsquo;.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>Style means paying attention to proper spelling and punctuation, correct sentence construction instead of non-sentences, and spelling out words in full instead of abbreviations only suitable for SMS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Style also means:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-GB\">being creative in what you write and how you write<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-GB\">making your communication look visually attractive by leaving a line space between each paragraph<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-GB\">using numbered points or bullets appropriately<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-GB\">using headings of a consistent style<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-GB\">considering the appropriate tone in your writing<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-GB\">structuring your messages logically.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">I recently did a follow up workshop for a client who had run my business writing workshop two months earlier. I asked the participants what had changed since our workshop. They told me proudly:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-GB\">We get straight to the point, using everyday language instead of beating about the bush with old-fashioned, useless phrases<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Our messages are structured more logically so the reader can clearly see the action needed<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-GB\">We try to avoid the passive phrases that we used to use, like &lsquo;Please be informed&rsquo;, &lsquo;Kindly be advised&rsquo;, &lsquo;Please find attached&rsquo;, etc<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-GB\">We seem more approachable because our language is less formal and much more friendly, as though we are having a conversation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Bingo! This is how to earn trust and confidence!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Please leave me a note and tell me what steps you are taking to earn trust and confidence and
