Shirley Says E-Newsletter Issue 56
November 2007

Dear Reader,

"Change is inevitable. Change is constant."
so said Benjamin Disraeli.

My working life has changed rather a lot since this time last year, and as the year starts drawing to a close it's a good time to consolidate these changes and start making firm plans for a new start in 2008.

This month's newsletter, therefore, takes on the theme of 'change'. My major changes involve my new business model, and you can read all about these changes in the first 2 articles below, and in the third article you can read Rebecca Morgan's formula for growth, just in case you are considering any change too.

I will be bringing you some more exciting news next month about further changes, namely my new website, so do watch this space! Meanwhile, I hope you'll take a look at my new photo page where you'll see lots of photographs from the recent ST Training Solutions workshops.

OK that's all for now then. I would love to hear from you with any comments on this month's newsletter, so please drop me a line or two if you can.

Have a happy week, and a happy month. See you soon!

Shirley :-)

  • Thanks to Sam for many years of great collaboration

I'm pleased to announce this month that my business model is changing again. After the successful launch of ASSAP 2007 in April and STTS public workshops in October, I've decided to expand my business and take on more event management. It's a big leap for me, but an exciting one too, so I'm certainly looking forward to rising up to the challenge.

So after many years of working with LCI Executive Seminars, it's time for STTS to take over the wheels and run my own public workshops too. It's been a pleasure working with Sam Loo at LCI all these years, and he's done a great job in organising my public workshops. I'm delighted too that during this time Sam's business has grown considerably, and LCI now has many experienced trainers providing some interesting workshops. Do check out his latest workshops at www.lciseminars.com.

Sam and I remain good friends and will take the opportunity to work together and collaborate in future projects whenever the opportunity arises. I wish him and his company much success in the future!

    A Formula for Growth

As I move forward with my business, I thought I'd share with you this article from Rebecca Morgan on the topic of growth. Rebecca is conducting 2 workshops with ST Training Solutions in January - Time Management Triumphs and Calming Upset Customers. Don't miss these workshops during one of Rebecca's rare visits to Singapore.

"Why stay on earth except to grow?" said Robert Browning. Most people would agree with Browning. Unfortunately, growth doesn't always come easily; Often we feel 'stuck'. If you are feeling stuck, here is a formula to help you get unstuck:

Awareness + Self Discipline = Growth

    Awareness

Awareness is the knowledge of our strengths, weaknesses, goals, and desires. As we become aware, the picture becomes clear. Vaguely defined feelings become focused and gain power, much as a ray of morning light broadens into day.

We increase awareness through introspection, creativity, classes and workshops, counselling, reading, and honest talks with friends, family, co- workers, even bosses. Awareness is a process, rather than a goal.

The force of awareness carries its own motivation. For example, a smoker who experiences severe chest pains (awareness) may quit smoking with surprising ease. If the stakes are high enough, we translate awareness into action, i.e. growth, without much discipline.

More often than not, however, the immediate stakes are not so high, so obvious or so tangible that awareness creates action. More often, we see the wisdom of changing our behavior while we continue our old patterns.

    + Self-Discipline

To break out of old patterns we need discipline. Athletes have coaches and musicians have teachers to provide both awareness and discipline. Most of the time, though, you're on your own.

How can you be your own coach? Begin by focusing on your goal, visualising the outcome, and creating a plan (e.g. start with manageable steps, write them down, and keep promises made to yourself). You might enlist a friend as a surrogate coach to help you stay on track.

But sometimes nothing seems to work. No matter what you do, you remain stuck in old patterns. How do you know when to give up? When the effort is not worth the payoff? When your progress isn't equal to the time you spend? Or maybe you never give up.

    = Growth

We don't achieve every goal we set for ourselves, but we can grow from every attempt we make - no matter what the outcome. For this reason our formula does not equal 'success' or 'results'. We won't always succeed. However, if we choose, we can grow to a new level of wisdom.

So the formula itself isn't magic. It is, however, a shorthand method to help us remember why we put ourselves through painful and difficult situations, and why we deny ourselves certain pleasures. We like the feeling of working through the equation. We like the growth. We like knowing that we are better than we were before.

    Meet Shamee!

As ST Training Solutions moves into a new era, my assistant Shamee's workload will be increasing in volume. Many of you already know Shamee, as she's the main point of contact for registration and enquiries. So if you have any queries about any STTS workshop, please give Shamee a call - you can contact her on 6868 1069 or mobile 90265292. She will be pleased to help you.
