One of the questions Alison Lester was asked at ASSAP 2006 (the Asian Summit for Secretaries and Admin Professionals) was "How to overcome fear? Especially communicating with bosses or presenting in front of an audience? Words just canít come out from my mouth, my mind goes blank."

Here are Alison's thoughts on this important topic:

You are not alone in feeling this way! You are panicking, because being in front of people in a situation in which we fear how we will be judged makes us feel very threatened. When we feel threatened, our instincts for self-protection kick in and we feel that rush of adrenalin that is designed to help us fight or flee. You must find a way to remain calm. Donít let negative thoughts run away with you! There are many, many ways to deal with this, including positive imagine (imagine yourself succeeding at it!), deep breathing, disassociation, physical activity, mental focus, and lots of positive self-talk. Ask yourself a bit why you feel insecure, and tell yourself that you have what it takes to speak under pressure. Because you do. The words are there. Itís only the adrenalin thatís in the way.
